Visiting Microsoft HQ in Redmond, WA
This week I had the pleasure of being invited to the Microsoft HQ in Redmond, WA. The reason was that the SQL Server development team would like to meet and interact with SQL Server tools ISVs to discuss on premise SQL Server vs. SQL database and lift the curtain on new features in SQL Server 2016. I was kindly invited by Mark Souza, who also helped me getting in contact with product managers within BI and data warehousing.
Everything we talked about during the visit is under NDA, so unfortunately I cannot write about it. But I was impressed about the new openness within the development organisation, we even almost saw feature roadmaps. And specific questions could be asked and was answered.
In my role as product owner, I found it very interesting to discover how we have the same kind of challenges, whether you are a small shop like ours or a giant like Microsoft.
We finished day one with a dinner, and I had a great evening discussing everything from careers moves over SSIS internals and features to LEGO wii games and parenting.
On day two, I was on my own, with a couple of Effektor presentations scheduled with the MDS team and the APS team. I was a little bit nervous, but I think I did ok, and I got some very specific and useful feedback on Effektor.
A quick stop in the Microsoft shop on campus and then a long flight back to New Haven. Awesome.
