Get recertified: renew your MCSE Data Platform certification
A few years ago I took the five exams required for the Microsoft certification MCSE Data Platform (which I also call the “big drivers license” for SQL Server.) The certification last three years, after which you must pass an applicable re-certification exam. My time was up, and I needed to do something about it.
You can re-certify in two ways:
Pass a number of Microsoft Virtual Academy (MVA) courses online, or
Take the Exam 469: “Recertification for MCSE: Data Platform” from a test center.
In the past, I have used Microsoft Virtual Academy training to help me get updated on features, I don’t normally use. And since it is totally free, I went for this option.
There are two paths, you can follow to get credit for re-certification:
Database app developer, and
Database administrator (DBA)
For both paths, you need to pass the following five courses:
Design and Implement Cloud Data Platform Solutions
Data Storage and Processing in the Cloud Demystified
Querying with Transact-SQL
Designing Database Solutions for SQL Server
In the Database app developer track, you need to pass additional five courses:
Getting Started with Microsoft Databases in Hybrid cloud
Developing Microsoft SQL Server Databases
Implementing Entity Framework with MVC
Platform for Hybrid Cloud with SQL Server 2014
You’ve Got Documents! A MongoDB Jump Start
In the Database administrator track, you only need to pass additional three courses:
Administering Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Jump Start
Upgrading to Microsoft SQL Server 2014
Updating Your Database Management Skills to SQL Server 2014
Each course consists of a number of modules with videos, followed by a multiple-choice test of five questions. If you know the topic of the module, you can skip the video, and go directly to the test. To pass a course, you need to pass all module tests.
I went for the DBA track, and passed all tests in all the courses during two evenings. It wasn’t too hard, but I did need to do a little reflection on how things work, and I think that that’s actually an OK way to be recertified.
Then I send in my MVA transcript from, and after one day, I got a friendly email:
Congratulations! We have examined your MVA transcript and have verified that you have completed all of the required assessments in the Data Platform Skills Path. As a result, you have fulfilled the recertification requirement for your MCSE: Data Platform certification.
We have updated your MCP transcript to reflect the skills you have earned in completing the Skills Path, as well as the new Inactive Date.
So, now I have three more years where I can call myself a MCSE.
